Cleveland NJROTC Academy
St. Louis, MO
Talented, intelligent, creative, innovative, motivated, dedicated and energetic teachers are absolutely the single most significant factor in the success of our school.
Describe the most successful activity your school has initiated to strengthen ties to your community.
Since we are a Junior Naval Academy, we have an intrinsic connection to patriotic ceremony. We are the official color guard for the Mayor of St. Louis and the Federal Court flag retirement ceremony each year. We have participated in the color guard for the Cardinals and at the Soldier's Memorial. We are asked to be color guard for a myriad of civic events. We present a polished, well practiced ceremony which represents our school well and makes our community quite proud of our students.
What are your school’s top two goals for the next year?
We have the same two goals every year. We are completely dedicated to the improvement of teaching and learning at Cleveland.
What is the single most important factor in the success of your school that others could replicate?
Talented, intelligent, creative, innovative, motivated, dedicated and energetic teachers are absolutely the single most significant factor in the success of our school.
Describe the program or initiative that has had the greatest positive effect on student achievement, including closing achievement or opportunity gaps, if applicable.
Our Professional Learning Communities have had the greatest effect on student achievement. Our PLCs are grade level and they meet twice weekly. They design tiered instruction. They correlate instruction so that disciplines support each other perhaps teaching separate aspects of the same concept or standard simontaneously. They meet with students who are struggling with academics or behaviors often inviting parents. They provide grade level tutoring. They look for ways to improve teaching and learning through conferences, workshops, book studies, and visits to other schools.
Explain how Title I funds are used to support your improvement efforts.
Title 1 funds support learning throughout Cleveland. We purchase creative resources, innovative programs; computer labs and interactive smart boards for each classroom. Funds pay for after school learning which provides individual support and differentiation not always available in the regular classroom.
Describe how data is used to improve student achievement and inform decision making.
Data is at the center of everything Cleveland does from schedules to celebrations. All teachers use data trackers to monitor student achievement and inform instruction. Grade level PLCs analyze student achievement data and create strategies, practices and timelines which will be common throughout all classes. Our assessment data team meets monthly to review data relating to end of course assessments. We create timelines, strategies, interventions and lists of students who will test in the spring. Our staff discusses student data as it relates to whole school culture. We discuss grading, assessment and instruction and ways we can improve teaching and learning throughout the school. We design and create professional development based on student achievement data. Finally care team looks at attendance data and ways we might intervene to support students who do not always get to school.
Describe your school culture and explain changes you’ve taken to improve it.
If you visit Cleveland, you see a disciplined and orderly school filled with teachers and students highly engaged in teaching and learning. Our day begins with muster. Students request permission to enter a room and do pushups when they are late for class. If you stay long enough you will hear teachers talk about how to reach the student with no buy in or how proud they are of another student, but mostly you will see creative energy manifested in lessons designed to entice students. The big change that I made when I became principal and have maintained is that we are collaborative. My job is to support teachers and create an environment so they can successfully do what they do so well...and that is teach. When there is an issue we solve it together. We plan together and we revise together. We research; we try new things; we reflect on our work together....forever in a state of growth.
