Crescent Elementary
Beckley, WV
Our school functions as a family. Staff, students, and parents feel safe and secure coming to our building. We have fostered the philosopy of "Bucket Filling". This is based on the books by Carol McCloud. Students are reminded each day to use kind words and actions to ensure that a positive environment exists.
- Describe the most successful activity your school has initiated to strengthen the ties to your community.
- Crescent Elementary lost our guidance counselor to lung cancer this school year. This was a very sad time for our staff, students, and parents. In her final days our dear Ms. Beard stayed in the Bowyers Hospice House. Our school family arranged a "snack drive" in which students were asked to bring snack items for the families of the patients during their time at hospice. Crescent Elementary was able to donate two truck loads of food to hospice. This connected our school to the community and will continue through the years as our way of giving back.
- What are your school’s top two goals for the next year?
-
Crescent Elementary Teachers will utilize the WV Curriculum Standards and Objectives, The Next Generation Standards, collaborative teams, and school specific staff development to ensure aademic progress.
Crescent Elementary School will provide a safe and orderly environment that fosters learning, personal-social and leadership skills. - Explain how Title I funds have supported your improvement efforts.
- Title I funds are utilized in many ways to enhance the learning environment in our school. Most importantly by providing additional staffing which allows for supportive and personalized learning of struggling students. Title 1 teachers work collaboratively with classroom teachers and the principal to ensure the success of all students. Title 1 funds provide necessary parent training which is integral to student achievement. Funding allows the school to provide additional resources to students, staff, and parents providing the differential learning that all students deserve.
- Describe how data is used to improve student achievement and inform decision making.
- Data drives all instruction decisions in our school. To ensure this takes place, our school schedules common planning regularly. All teachers meet and review the data and are given opportunities to have input into new grouping of students. Formative and summative assessments drive the evolving needs that students’ possess.Weekly assessments also allow insight into the specific standards and skills needed for each individual student.
- Describe your school culture and explain changes you’ve taken to improve it.
- Our school functions as a family. Staff, students, and parents feel safe and secure coming to our building. We have fostered the philosopy of "Bucket Filling". This is based on the books by Carol McCloud. Students are reminded each day to use kind words and actions to ensure that a positive environment exists. We partner with a local church which supports our most needy students by providing a "Bag of Love" filled with food which helps provide nutrition over the weekend and holidays. The church is also very active in providing readers for our Read Aloud Program. We have also incorpoated a sense of giving back through our hospice food drive described below. All these components help to teach our students the importance of being responsible citizens and create an atmosphere of caring for all in our school family.
