In the NIC of Time: Fostering a Culture of Improvement through Professional Conversations
A “Networked Improvement Community (NIC) offers a promising approach to school improvement…it is a radical departure from typical school improvement practice that will require significant changes to the cultures of schools” (Senechal, 2015). In a continued effort to support and increase capacity of district and school leaders to utilize a NIC to improve schools, Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) in partnership with Region 5 Comprehensive Center implemented a NIC experience for local education agency leaders providing a platform to collaborate with peers across districts while focusing on solving common problems of practice. Building upon last year’s ESEA session by reflecting on year one of the VDOE-NIC, describing learning and reflection cycles around operationalizing the continuous improvement process and frameworks in divisions and schools. Participants will discuss how to apply a NIC within their context and network with others working on common problems of practice.

Speakers
Rachel Crowley
Rachel is a research associate on the Region 5 Comprehensive Center (R5CC) team. She supports SEAs in continuous improvement, team building, and knowledge management. She currently provides technical assistance in developing Networked Improvement Communities (NICs) with three SEAs.
April Kiser-Edwards
Dr. Kiser-Edwards has extensive experience with providing LEAs support for federal and state legislative processes, continuous improvement, grant management, team building, and developing systems to achieve goals. April has been the linchpin in the enhancement of the NIC resources through leading implementation with divisions via the VDOE-NIC.
Lori Vandeborne
Lori has extensive experience in educational administration, successfully leading educators through improvement models. She currently provides technical assistance to seven SEAs in areas such as Principal Preparation and Standards, Coaching, Mathematics, Strategic Planning, Employability, High-Quality Instruction, and Systems Coherence.
