Let’s Get Real: Using Summer and Afterschool to Engage High School Learners

The pandemic highlighted the unequal experience students have in their homes and communities when schools are closed. But even with schools open, students spend 80% of their time annually not in a classroom (afterschool, summers, weekends etc). To engage students, support college and career readiness and accelerate learning, ESEA and federal relief funding can support schools to leverage student opportunities during out of school time including through partnerships with community based programs. High school students can use this time to engage in hands-on learning, paid career experiences, and 21st Century skill building. Research shows real-world experiences and positive adult relationships in out of school time make an impact for students academically, socially and emotionally. In this session, discuss how community partnerships can engage your learners with real-world experiences, close opportunity gaps, and help support all students across time and settings.
