Teaching students to expertly utilize learning strategies can be a challenge. This can be especially daunting when teaching students who are adding on a new language (English learners). However, we should not delay bringing learning strategies to the forefront, but rather purposefully teach students to utilize learning strategies with independent expertise. In this session, participants learn practical techniques for teaching, modeling, and facilitating students’ practice using learning strategies. In particular, participants explore ways to utilize visuals to support scaffolding toward applying strategies to reading text. With appropriate guidance and support, students at any level of language proficiency can learn to implement strategies independently with expertise.
