Despite mixed reports about the impact of SIG nationwide, Massachusetts has experienced proven success with these grants. Although success at the high school level has been more limited, seven strategies distinguish Massachusetts high schools able to improve student outcomes from high schools still struggling to do so. These include: creating a culture of open, two-way communication; implementing an instructional schedule that meets student and teacher needs; providing teacher training to identify and address student needs; using collaborative systems for identifying and addressing student needs; consistently implementing a well-defined multitiered system of support; consistently implementing a schoolwide behavior plan; and consistently implementing a cohesive system of wraparound supports. The presentation includes lessons learned from New Mission High School in Boston and encourages participants to think about how these strategies may be relevant in their unique school settings.
