Family Engagement with an Equity Lens: Continuous Improvement Resources and Practices

We invite participants to attend this hands-on session to learn about two free resources that can help leverage family engagement to improve student outcomes at the school and district level: The “Family Engagement Toolkit: Continuous Improvement through an Equity Lens” and the “Self-Reflection Tool for Family Engagement”. These resources are grounded in the Dual Capacity-Building Framework and support a continuous improvement process with a focus on engaging underrepresented families. We will share how these resources are being used successfully at the school and district level to plan, implement and reflect on policies and practices in three key areas: 1) Building relationships; 2) Partnering with families to support student outcomes; and 3) Seeking input in decision-making. The session will include activities for participants to reflect on current practices and plan next steps to strengthen family engagement in their local context.

Margit Birge

Margit Birge has provided technical assistance at WestEd for 20 years to state education agencies, county offices of education, districts and schools. Her expertise is engaging underrepresented families and building school-family-community partnerships to improve student outcomes.
Marissa Lazo-Necco

Marissa Lazo-Necco has 20 years of experience in service to English learners and their families. She has worked in the classroom, in parent centers and at the district and county level building family-school-community partnerships and designing professional development for educators.
Lidia Renteria

Lidia Renteria has 25 years of experience in building strong partnerships with families and coaching teachers on family engagement. As a California Department of Education consultant, she has led projects related to professional learning, best practices for English learners and Tribal collaboration.
Marcelino "Mars" Serna

Marcelino “Mars” Serna has 34 years of experience as a public servant in education and human services. At the San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools, he supports family and community engagement initiatives in 33 districts and he is a board member in the Fontana Unified School District.
