Davis Elementary School
Greenwood, MS
Data is used to improve student achievement and inform decision making in several ways at Davis Elementary. We gather baseline data on students using MCT2, MAP, and district assessments. From the data, we set targets for students. After each of the assessments, we monitor the progress of the students and students record them on a progress monitoring sheet. We analyze the data and report our findings to the teachers, the students, and the parents.
- What are your school’s top two goals for the next year?
- My school’s top two goals include improving growth by ten percent or better in Language Arts and Mathematics, and being a Star School which is equivalent to a grade of “A” based on Mississippi’s Accountability Model.
- What is the single most important factor in the success of your school that others could replicate?
- The single most important factor in the success of Davis Elementary School is time on task. We begin instruction promptly at 7:45 a.m. in the morning. We are also diligent in eliminating as many distractions as possible by placing “Academics First” as outlined in our district’s focus for schools.
- Describe the program or initiative that has had the greatest positive effect on student achievement.
- The 21st Century Extended School Program has had the greatest positive effect on student achievement at Davis Elementary. It gives us more time on task and we work with smaller groups of students which enables us to better differentiate instruction targeting the skills carrying the greatest weight on the MCT2.
- Identify the professional development activities you use to improve the teaching portion of the teaching and learning process.
- The professional development activities I use to improve the teaching portion of the teaching and learning process is modeling lessons for teachers. This strategy is particularly effective with new teachers because it helps them to bridge the gap between theory and practice. I also allow teachers to conduct peer observations to learn strategies to implement in their classrooms.

Parents receive information and are afforded the opportunity to give input during Title I Parent Meetings, PTO, Parent Workshops conducted by the district, and parent conferences. Teachers and students meet with the principal and assistant principal as teams and individually to make decisions to
improve student achievement. Students as well as teachers are well versed and are able to provide their targets, their current achievement level, and are aware of their growth residuals in language arts and mathematics.
