Oak Hill Elementary School
High Point, NC
Our school culture is completely focused on accepting nothing less than the best from each staff member and student. Since our turn-around effort began in the 2010-2011 school year we confront every excuse and work together in an effort to meet each child's needs.
Describe the most successful activity your school has initiated to strengthen the ties to your community.
At the beginning of our school turn-around (Fall 2010) and again in Year 3 (Fall 2012) we canvassed our neighborhoods and went to every family with a flier welcoming them to the Oak Hill school year. We made sure all families knew about Open House and the First Day of School. This continues to be an effort other schools and our families talk about!
What are your school’s top two goals for the next year?
Increase Academic Achievement in Literacy

Decrease discipline disproportionality and achievement gap with our African American Students
What is the single most important factor in the success of your school that others could replicate?
A staff that accepts NO excuses and takes full responsibility to ensure each minute is used for the academic well-being of all students
Describe how data is used to improve student achievement and inform decision making.
We use specific and focused PLC meetings to reflect on common assessment data and make necessary improvements to teaching. We also use universal screeners in phonics, fluency and comprehension to ensure we meet all students’ needs. Every decision we make lives by the motto on the principal’s desk, "In God we trust, everyone else bring data."
Describe your school culture and explain changes you’ve taken to improve it.
Our school culture is completely focused on accepting nothing less than the best from each staff member and student. Since our turn-around effort began in the 2010-2011 school year we confront every excuse and work together in an effort to meet each child’s needs. Frequent monitoring walkthroughs ensure fidelity and that high expectations are met throughout our school on a daily basis.
