South Beauregard Upper Elementary School
Longville, LA
We believe that school change... school improvement... comes from believing in people and wanting the best for each of them.
Describe your philosophy of school change or improvement.
I believe that school change... school improvement... comes from believing in people and wanting the best for each of them. At South Beauregard Upper Elementary we believe in the worth and ability of ALL of our students and ALL of our faculty. This leads administrators, teachers and students to do what it takes to be successful. I want the best for and from our teachers... so I do my best to provide for them and to encourage them to push themselves as educators. We want the best for and from our students... we do our best to provide for them and to encourage them to push themselves as learners.
What is the single most important factor in the success of your school that others could replicate?
I believe that the single most important factor leading to the success of our students at South Beauregard Upper Elementary is an underlying belief that all students deserve the same opportunities. This belief guides us in providing the best education to each student that we can. Equally important to this effort is striving to identify and reduce the obstacles that make learning more problematic for the disadvantaged and challenged students. We believe that a FAIR and appropriate education means meeting the needs of the individual students as best we are able. If this principle guides your day-to-day decision making as an administrator and as a teacher, then I believe you will bring success to your school.
Describe the program or initiative that has had the greatest positive effect on student achievement, including closing achievement or opportunity gaps, if applicable.
One of the many programs that I am proud of at South Beauregard Upper Elementary is our Inclusion program. Having an extra teacher in the classrooms of students with special needs and circumstances allows these children greater opportunity to receive the attention they need. The homeroom and inclusion teachers at our school work very closely to ensure that they are identifying the needs of their students and providing them with the support that they need to learn. I truly believe that all schools should strongly consider the inclusion model of teaching in their classrooms.
Explain how Title I funds are used to support your improvement efforts.
We use our Title I funds in three important ways.
First, we use our funding to purchase curriculum materials to support the academic goals of our state, district and school. This may come in the form of texts, novels or workbooks.
Secondly, we use or funding for technology enhancements. Computer labs, tablets, smart boards, projectors and student messaging devices are some of the ways we support learning.
Finally, we use our money for strategic staffing positions. Our school has a Reading Interventionist that is integral to the success of our students. We also have a Lab Manager who assists with technology and management of our district-sponsored Title I programs. And in the spring, we hire teacher-tutors to help at-risk students to fill in any learning gaps that may have developed during the year.
Describe your school culture and explain changes you’ve taken to improve it.
As principal of South Beauregard Upper Elementary, one of my favorite complements to hear from visitors to our school is how warm and inviting we are. Our school CARES. I truly believe that every faculty and staff member loves our school and wants the best for each other and the best for our students. This belief extends beyond the classroom... you will find this pervasive feeling with our office and custodial staff, our food service employees, our school resource officer and our administration.
High expectations are also evident at "The Upper"! Faculty and staff keep a high bar for themselves which is evident in the workings, management and upkeep of the school. This standard is also set for ALL students. Students... no matter their background... are expected, encouraged and supported to achieve their best.
This rigorous and dynamic school culture is backed by the administration at SBUE... we simply aspire to inspire our faculty, staff and students to be successful!
