Leveraging ELD Standards: Re-envisioning Equitable Systems for Multilingual Learners

Consistent with federal legislation and recent theoretical trends to support multilingual learners’ engagement in grade-level academic learning, the WIDA ELD Standards Framework, 2020 Edition, moves more deeply into a content-driven approach to language development. In this session, we invite educational leaders to problem-solve how best to leverage the four Big Ideas that anchor the Framework to design foundations for programs and systems that commit to equity and justice in teaching and learning, namely: 1) equity of opportunity and access, 2) content-language integration, 3) collaboration among stakeholders, and 4) a functional approach to language development. Join us to learn more about how this robust Framework illuminates an asset-based vision that fosters interactive student learning; supports collaborative practice; makes the language of academic content visible; and serves as a powerful resource for designing and delivering curriculum and instruction.
