Support Structures and Guidance on the Education Rights of Students in Foster Care

This presentation will create awareness of the unique needs of students in foster care and will provide guidance on the education rights of this students. The lecture will include the following: - Identification of foster care student needs through academic data outcomes - Useful information to guide professionals in creating a positive educational experience for students in foster care. - Educational information to familiarize professionals with the complexities of the foster care system - Relevant laws and policies that influence the educational experience of a student in foster care. - Explanation of the roles of the foster care state liaison and district foster care district liaison - Discussion of the role we all play to employ and improve systems and protocols - Best cross-system practices and partnerships that benefit students in foster care.

Speakers
Marivi Wright

Marivi Wright has more than 20 years of experience working with underprivilege children. She has worked with children in education, social and health services fields. She served two terms as the Chair of the School Health Advisory Council for the Duval County School District, one of the largest school districts in Florida. Today, she works as the Greater Albany Public School District Health Services Coordinator in Oregon and the foster care point of contact for the district.

Marlie Magill

Marlie Magill is the State Foster Care Liaison with the Oregon Department of Education and possesses nearly a decade of direct experience working with youth in Foster Care and their families.
