The Wonder of Learning Starts at Home: Supporting ELL Family Involvement in Education

We know that English language learners are the fastest growing segment of school age children. We also know that family involvement boosts student achievement, but it can be a challenge for schools to involve the families of ELL students and build programs that support the home - school partnership in order to boost student achievement. In this session, the presenters will describe two successful programs implemented in their district, report on the data which reflects the programs' success, and give attendees strategies for replicating the programs. The underlying belief that reaching student families early was the force behind the two programs - one that focused on how families of incoming kindergartners could help their children be prepared for school and one that focused on how families of first graders could help promote literacy at home.

Ines Guenther

Ines Guenther was born in Ecuador. She has a BA in Spanish and Literature and has taught Spanish as a second language. She has been recognized for making a difference in the lives of minorities in her community and has been named "Outstanding Teacher" by the Idaho Association of Bilingual Education. She has extensive experience with ELL kindergarteners and families Works with teachers in district to support ELL students and their families. Currently, she is the ELL Programs Coach in District 91. 
Angela Lee

Angela Lee is an Instructional Coach with Idaho Falls School District 91. She has taught for 29 years with experience in kindergarten, third, fourth, and fifth grades. She holds a master's degree in Curriculum and Instruction and an endorsement in English as a New Language. She works with educators in her district to improve the success of English Language Learners by leading professional development and through classroom coaching.
