How Social and Emotional Skills Overcome Barriers to Learning

Friday February 1, 2019
11:00 AM - 12:00 PM
Grand Ballroom 2501 B

This session will explore how to overcome the barriers to learning faced by disadvantaged students by integrating social and emotional learning (SEL) into every classroom using a systematic, curricular approach called Positive Action. Research has shown that social & emotional skills can improve academic & life outcomes for students more than almost any other school-based approach. Participants will understand how a curriculum that includes fundamental skills for the physical, intellectual, social & emotional development of children reduces the demands on teachers, improves school climate, and creates space in the school for learning. While all students benefit from improved social and emotional skills, students in high-poverty schools receive the greatest benefit, in some cases achieving gains of 90% on state reading and math tests. Participants will learn how these outcomes were reached and how social and emotional learning engages students in a transformative educational process.
