It's 3 PM. Do You Know Where Your Students Are? Educational Equity for the New Millennium.
Students today are likely to grow up in homes with a single working parent or two working parents. 11.3 million children go home each day to unsupervised households. Meanwhile, high income families show an ability to spend 7 times as much as low income families on enrichments for their children. Schools that aim to close achievement gaps can leverage funds to support students in out of school time providing students with real world learning like STEM, a nutritious meal, a safe space, access to technology, and caring adults. Research shows students who regularly attend quality afterschool and summer programs show academic improvements including grades, test scores, behavior, graduation rates, and engagement. Hear from one Camdenton, MO district how they use federal and private funds to provide students with impressive opportunities. Then participate in a policy discussion on how the flexibility in ESSA can support equity and achievement across the day.
