Beaverton School District, an Oregon suburban school district, implemented an early release Wednesday schedule in 2017-18. Building administrators were given the first early release day of the month and teachers were given the last three weeks to participate in collaboration and professional learning events. Beaverton’s teaching and learning depart offered courses during the third Wednesday, providing teachers additional choice in their personal learning. These “Week 3” events delivered over 9,000 optional professional development hours to teachers using a variety of online, on site, and anytime courses. This session briefly describes challenges and successes faced in year one of Week 3 implementation, then emphasizes the policies of improving teacher choice in year two. Week 3 2.0 builds upon the digital infrastructure to create more focused “pathways” that better align to teacher roles and assignments.
