This session will explore the importance of integrating social and emotional learning (SEL) into every classroom using a systematic, curricular approach called Positive Action. Participants will experience the engagement of a typical classroom lesson, discuss school-wide behavioral challenges, and consider research that supports integrated SEL by demonstrating improved student and school-wide outcomes. Positive Action has been shown to help close the achievement gap and improve school climate and culture. While all students benefit from improved social and emotional skills, students in high-poverty schools receive the greatest benefit, in some cases achieving gains of 21% on state reading tests and 51% on state math tests. Participants will learn how these outcomes were reached and how Positive Action engages students in a transformative educational process.
