Parental Engagement: Beyond the Compliance Checklist

Work Smarter, Not Harder. Research show that children have better attendance, higher achievement and better social skills when their parents are involved in their education, yet schools continue to struggle to get parents engaged in activities and events at school. Flyers and lecture style presentations no longer draw families and communities to schools. Schools and districts must be innovative and creative in inviting individuals and in the style of presentation given. Participants in this session will learn how to effectively involve and engage parents and community members in the education of the communities’ young people. We will share ideas and strategies on what we have found to be successful ways to engage families in our community and will show video clips of successful events. We will also share how we involve our non-public and agency families in all our events. You will come away with ideas that can be implemented into your own schools and community immediately.

Susan Aguilera-Robles

Susan Aguilera-Robles is the Principal of Spring Lake Magnet Center. She is also the Family Leadership Facilitator in her building. Susan has a strong connection to her families and to the community around her schools. She has spent the last 15 years as a principal, working to make her school welcoming and inviting for all families.
Moniki Cannon

Moniki Cannon is a Title I parent that strives to help other parents be leaders in their own homes. She has helped countless Omaha Public School's parents by co-presenting Family Leadership Institute, keynote presentations, workshops and seminars. She is also the president of PTSA at Miller Park Elementary.
Tina Forte

Tina Forte' has been the Director of Title I for the past 5 years. Her goal as the Title I Director was to increase parental involvement at the district level. Over the past 5 years, the OPS Title I department has had a minimum of 3 district parent events each year with 150-700 parents attending.
Matthew Rohlfsen

Matthew Rohlfsen has been a Teacher Leader in the Title I department for the last 6 years. He works with our Non-Public buildings and also coordinates the details of all parent events.
