ParentCamp: Innovative Strategy to Engage Families

This session will provide participants with innovative ways to engage parents in topics of importance to Title I schools and school districts and the state level using the ParentCamp model. ParentCamp is a highly effective vehicle that can be used to provide parents with a forum to share their voices, while also promoting a viable way of partnering for collective student success. Participants will experience first-hand how the ParentCamp is organized and implemented in a Title I school, school district and/or at the state level. Additionally, ParentCamp is linked to the U.S. Department of Education’s Dual Capacity-Building Framework. The session will demonstrate how this model is revolutionizing the way we engage families and draw on their funds of knowledge.

Young-chan Han

As a Title I/Family Engagement Specialist at the Maryland State Department of Education, Young-chan Han works closely with district Title I Coordinators to ensure that all families are meanignfully engaged in education. Young-chan provides school team Profesional Development and training on ESEA Section 1118 requirements and share creative ways to engage parents in Title I Schools. At the April 18th, 2016 U.S. Department of Education’s ParentCamp:International, Young-chan served as one of the planning committee members and was responsible for identifying and inviting immigrant parent leaders to the event. Young-chan also connected with several cultural connectors (both educators and parents) and was able to mobilize over 125 immigrant parents from Maryland. She supported the US Department of Education by organizing the event, supporting with email invitations to parents, educators, and community members, developing facilitator’s guidelines, and evaluations. The ParentCamp International brought parents who represented over 15 languages and countries.

Jennifer Love

Ms. Love works directly with immigrant parents with children from ages 3 and up. She is responsible for providing qualified interpreters to thousands of immigrant parents residing in Prince George's County Public School System in Maryland. Under her leadership, she has initiated outstanding programs and outreaches to support immigrant families including International Parent Leadership Consortium (IPLC) and KinderConnect program. Jennifer Love and Young-chan Han co-authored an article titled: "Stages of immigrant parent involvement - survivors to leaders" in KAPPAN online magazine, December 2015/January 2016 issue. Both of her programs are highlighted in the article.
