Evaluating State and Local Assessment Systems

This session will focus on the President's Testing Action Plan released in October 2015, which encourages States and districts to evaluate their assessment systems to ensure that tests are "fair, are of high quality, take up the minimum necessary time, and reflect the expectation that students will be prepared for success in college and careers." The U.S. Department of Education will discuss guidance and supports we are providing to support States with these efforts, implications of the new ESSA for testing, and promising and encouraging practices from States and districts.

Patrick Rooney

Mr. Rooney has helped lead the work of the Reform Support Network, providing technical assistance to States implementing comprehensive Race to the Top reforms and leads efforts to support states as they develop and implement educator equity plans.
Deb Sigman

Deb Sigman, a state and national education leader focusing on connecting assessments with enhanced student learning, is the Deputy Director of WestEd’s Standards, Assessment, and Accountability Services (SAAS) program.  Sigman’s experience in education policy, student assessment, and accountability contributes to the development of assessments that provide useful results for educators and their students, and assist school leadership, teachers, and parents to better use assessment data to support student learning and achievement.
