Innovation in Education: Developing a STEM School
The world beyond our school doors has advanced so rapidly that the education system has struggled to keep up. With challenging demographics, changing mandates, responsibility to accountability - all under the umbrella of ‘student’s best interest’ - Title I schools can struggle to make progress. This session will provide an overview of the systems, processes and changes required to implement a STEM-based model of education that balances these variables. We will explore what STEM is, with an emphasis on integrating STEM content with existing reading, writing and math standards. We will discuss how to shift the context for learning from worksheets, classroom activities and investigations to projects and ultimately Problem Based Learning. We will provide examples of our curriculum and allow participants to evaluate their own STEM immersion status using a free, comprehensive online tool from Science Foundation Arizona.
