The Next Generation ELA/Literacy standards require a command of Standard Academic English in writing, speaking, and reading. But most teachers lack the linguistic know-how necessary to help young African-American English speakers become bi-dialectal. Most rely on a correctionist approach, which doesn’t work academically, confuses young learners, and can convey a demeaning cultural bias. ToggleTalk is the first developmentally appropriate and evidence-based Contrastive Analysis methodology created specifically for kindergarten and first grade students. Code-Switching Lessons shows grades 2-6 teachers how to build on students’ linguistic strengths and master Standard Academic English grammar. Learn why and how program authors Dr. Holly Craig, Dr. Rebecca Wheeler, and urban educator Rachel Swords created these instructional breakthroughs and how the programs complement the core reading & Language Arts curriculum in ways that enable teachers to help prevent the achievement gap.
