Rich Brain, Poor Brain: Exploring the Differences in School and in Life

Thursday January 28, 2016
1:30 - 2:30 PM
General Assembly Theater A

Should a child's zip code define his or her opportunities for success in school and in life? Of course not! But in reality, "Rich Schools = Rich Brains" and "Poor Schools = Poor Brains", unless Title I leaders make choices that change the energy. Dr. Bone's presentation examines the background knowledge or schema about poverty and brain development (briefly, but carefully) and then proposes 8 different comparisons between curricular and social opportunities that are routinely found in wealthy, advantaged public schools (or private ones) and seldom found in high poverty counterparts. That is interesting, but Dr. Bone will then propose 8 "swaps" or suggestions to replicate the advantageous practices in less expensive, yet productive ways. Practices in literacy, creativity, socialization, parent engagement, geography, STEMS, the arts, and mentoring will be explored. A "rich brain" gets that way through experiences. Why not give all brains those experiences in cost effective ways?
