The Effects of Arts-Integrated Education on Title I and Students in Low-Income Families

Friday January 29, 2016
10:30 - 11:30 AM
Room 360

Interest in the effects of arts-integrated instruction is gaining momentum. Three examples of how evidence of this work is manifesting in schools will be discussed. The Kennedy Center’s research will be presented via findings of the 2012-13 longitudinal study conducted with 4th and 5th graders, their parents, and teachers in public schools in the DC metropolitan area, which revealed a significant relation between income and students’ cognitive flexibility (including problem solving). Also, two arts-integration projects implemented by the San Diego Unified District in its Title I schools, the "Teacher Research Project" and “Learning Through the Arts,” will be included. Both projects enlist teachers as participants (and researchers) who are engaged in documenting various aspects of students’ learning in their arts-integrated classrooms as well as in developing arts-integration units linked to academic achievement goals.
