Drop Out! Stop Out! Push Out!: Graduating Indigenous Students

Workshop participants will review recent dropout statistics, existing initiatives to improve high school graduation rates, the systemic nature of the dropout challenge, and alternative approaches to increasing Native student graduation rates. Researchers examined statistical data from NCEE, USDOE, and USDOL studies along with original research to examine Indigenous students high school graduation rates. Participants will discuss specific recommendations for responding to rates of high school completion among American Indian and Alaska Native students in western states (AK, AZ, CA, CO, ID, MT, NV, NM, OR, UT, WA, WY) served by the Western Educational Equity Assistance Center (WEEAC) at WestEd. Authorized under Title IV of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and funded by the U.S. Department of Education, WEEAC provides technical assistance and training to school districts, tribal, and state education agencies to promote equitable education resources and opportunities. Dr. Jon Boxerman is an accomplished researcher with a deep appreciation of the complexities associated with educational research in real-world settings. With degrees in Earth Sciences and Learning Sciences, he possesses extensive experience conducting mixed methods research across diverse contexts and designing culturally-relevant model-based and Land-based learning and assessment approaches.

Speakers
Sharon Nelson-Barber

Dr Nelson-Barber has more than three decades of experience conducting research and providing technical assistance to advance educational outcomes for Native students. For 10 years she participated in the Regional Education Laboratory Network Program’s Indigenous Education Collaborative, a national group representing the system of Laboratories and charged with identifying and connecting appropriate education services to tribal communities across the country. The Indigenous Education State Leaders Network continued these efforts through the Comprehensive Center Network where, via the West Comprehensive Center, Nelson-Barber worked closely with state and local education leaders in Arizona, Nevada and Utah, providing technical assistance to improve outcomes for Native learners. Currently, she is associated with REL-Northwest and REL-West and participates in two cross-REL programs—one centered on Culturally Sustaining Pedagogy, the other on STEM Education. Nelson-Barber regularly works in partnership with other Indigenous researchers and educators whose communities span the lower 48 US states, Alaska, Micronesia, and many areas of Polynesia.
