As we look to support English learners (ELs) from an equity standpoint, many schools are creating spaces where the native or first languages of ELs become part of their instruction. This shift towards bilingual education programming has led to a need for resources that look to strengthen bilingual instruction. This is especially true for Spanish-English bilingual education programs. To support educators with this need, WIDA has developed Marco ALE, a Spanish language arts framework. Marco ALE takes the essential elements of Spanish language arts and presents them in a way in which education leaders can use them to develop strong standards and instructional materials for Spanish language arts instruction in bilingual programs. Join us to explore Marco ALE and together reimagine bilingual education!
Samuel Aguirre is the director of WIDA Español and assistant director of Consortium Relations at WIDA. Sam bridges Spanish instruction with English language development to support bilingual education in the U.S. and abroad. He manages the research, development, and delivery of resources in Spanish, including research, standards, professional learning, and assessments for WIDA and non-WIDA states. He also oversees WIDA consortium-related activities. His life experiences as a bi/multilingual learner in the U.S., a classroom educator, advocate of culturally and linguistically-diverse communities, and director of multilingual services at a state education agency provide a strong foundation for his role at WIDA.
