Partnering to Expand Access to Quality Summer/After School Learning & Enrichment
Education leaders face a critical need to improve outcomes for all students. For many students, the traditional school calendar is insufficient time to address gaps in learning and development. School and district leaders must offer expanded learning opportunities through summer and afterschool programs, which have proven benefits to improve outcomes for students. Beginning in 2021, the Michigan Department of Education and its partners have been exploring the state's role in maximizing and expanding these opportunities for all students, with a focus on partnerships with community-based organizations. This session highlights how states can encourage districts in their development of partnerships for expanded summer/after-school learning and enrichment to reach students of diverse backgrounds and levels. Participants will learn about the qualities of effective partnerships and the challenges they can help address, with highlights from the work of several districts in Michigan.
