Building Possibilities Through Increased Data Capacity: Workshop Analyzing English Learner Data

[Note: To get the most out of this workshop, please bring your computer to this session.] To inform practice and policy decisions, this workshop supports participants to identify, download, and analyze data for English Learners and English Learners with disabilities using Title III data. Conference participants will be introduced to data focused on English Learners available on ED Data Express (EDE), the U.S. Department of Education’s website that provides data on the Office of Elementary and Secondary Education (OESE) programs. By the end of the session, participants will know how use dashboards on EDE and have the tools and knowledge to download, analyze, and develop visualizations using Title III data. The workshop is designed for participants of all levels of expertise with excel – from beginners to advanced users.

Presenters
Karen Armstrong

Dr. Armstrong is part of U.S. Office of Elementary and Secondary Education (OESE) data team and leads the work related to data analysis, use, and dissemination. Her current work focuses on ensuring that privacy protected OESE data is provided to the public through ED Data Express (EDE) and supporting OESE stakeholders to analyze and use OESE data responsibly to support improved policy and practice. Before joining the OESE data team, she led mixed-methods education and labor research projects at IMPAQ International and managed evaluation work at the Institute of Education Sciences (IES) National Center for Education Evaluation and Regional Assistance (NCEE).
Sarah Newman

Sarah Newman leads the Management and Support Office Data Team within the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Elementary and Secondary Education (OESE). Her work covers all aspects of the data life cycle, including data governance, planning and development, collection and verification, and data, use, and analysis. She has been at the Department for over 10 years.
