Cultivating Literacy Leadership
What does a literacy leader do that propels his or her building or district to student gains? Dr. Hall has been working with principals, superintendents, district curriculum directors, and teachers in Title 1 schools for 20 years. Dr. Hall will talk about five principles for leadership based on the Wallace Foundation study titled The School Principal as Leader: Guiding Schools to Better Teaching and Learning" (January, 2013). The five principles include the following: 1. Shaping a vision of academic success for all students; 2. Creating a hospitable climate for staff and students; 3. Cultivating leadership in others; 4. Improving instruction; and 5. Managing people, data, and processes. Effective leaders walk through classrooms often spending less than ten minutes observing. Participants will receive a half-page Observation Form with eight key characteristics of effective literacy instruction. Dr. Hall will include tips on how to have honest conversations with teachers on improvement.
