From Priority School to NH's School of Excellence—Using the Problem of Practice Model

Problem of Practice Model Schools throughout the State of New Hampshire use the Problem of Practice Model to develop improvement plans. Dr. Mary Earick will walk the audience through this process and highlight the successes and lessons learned. The Innovation Zone (iZone) was created in response to a need to do things differently. The Manchester School District, school leaders, and community members are committed to finding a way for schools to develop and implement innovative practices for the purpose of improving student achievement. Amy Allen will share her school’s case study, “Rethinking Time to Improve Practice.” She will share how her school went from a Priority School to the 2015 New Hampshire School of Excellence Winner. She will share strategies, data, and lessons learned along the way.

Amy Allen

Amy Allen, the current Principal of Parker-Varney Elementary. In April 2015, Parker-Varney was awarded this NH School of Excellence Award winner. This prestigious award was given to their innovative practices, their use of data and their vision to improve the education of all students.
Mary Earick

Dr. Mary Earick is the Administrator for the Bureau of Integrated Programs and the State Title I Director at the New Hampshire Department of Education. Most recently she has led a reorganization of ESEA compensatory programs to an integrated management model with her team and the development of a problems of practice model of school innovation where the drivers of change are schools and districts. Prior to working at the NHDOE Mary was an Associate Professor of Early Childhood Education and a public school teacher in the New Haven, CT public schools. Her teaching has been featured in the documentary Teaching Tolerance in the Early Years and she is the author of Racially Equitable Teaching.
Pat Snow

Pat became Executive Director of the Innovation Zone in 2014. Her focus has been on raising achievement for all students, closing the achievement gap, preparing graduates for college and career, and supporting educator effectiveness in innovative and transformative ways. She has paid particular attention to strengthening Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics (STEAM) education and personalized learning. Pat believes that all students will succeed to the highest levels, if we believe they can.
