Showing Up: Strategies for Reducing Chronic Absenteeism

Presented Wednesday, July 26th

Among the dire educational consequences of the pandemic, the impact on student absenteeism stands out. Left unaddressed, high levels of absenteeism threaten to undermine efforts to help students recover academically and emotionally. In this webinar, FutureEd Associate Director Phyllis Jordan, author of the Attendance Playbook, will discuss effective, readily scalable approaches that help students and families overcome barriers to attendance and help schools provide the sort of climate and engaging curriculum that keeps students coming to class regularly.

Phyllis W. Jordan is associate director of FutureEd, an independent think tank at Georgetown University's McCourt School of Public Policy. Phyllis has written extensively for FutureEd about student absenteeism and Covid relief spending. An experienced writer and editor, Jordan served in senior editing positions at the Los Angeles Times and the Washington Post, where she managed a team of 40 reporters and her responsibilities included editing the newspaper’s education coverage. Jordan also worked at Attendance Works, a San Francisco-based national nonprofit focused on improving the policy, research and practice around school attendance.

The webinar was broadcast live on Wednesday, July 26th at 1 - 2:30pm Eastern (12pm Central, 11am Mountain, 10am Pacific). A recorded version will be available shortly.
