A Short-Cut to Student Engagement: Teaching Students to Ask Their Own Questions

Saturday February 7, 2015
9:45 - 10:45 AM
Room 255BC

Imagine classrooms alive with students actively asking questions, learning to improve their questions and strategizing about how to use their questions. Students who learn to ask questions become more engaged, take ownership of their learning and learn more. This session offers an introduction to an evidence-based strategy, the Question Formulation Technique (QFT), that produces these results. The QFT is widely used by teachers in Title I Schools who value being able to learn it one day and implement the next. In an interactive learning process, you will have the chance to experience the QFT, review how it is used in classrooms from K-12, and see a short video of its use in an urban school. Participants will also have the opportunity to reflect on the importance of all students learning to ask their own questions and identify ways they can share the strategy immediately in their districts and schools.
