Rebecca Abbott, from UC Berkeley’s Lawrence Hall of Science, will introduce you to a powerful research-based approach to curricular integration that capitalizes on the synergies between science and literacy. This instructional model provides gains for students in science knowledge while simultaneously supporting high-need learners in developing academic language. The exemplars she has to offer will allow us to experience strategies designed to support all students in the understanding of science content while developing literacy and cognitive skills. Rebecca earned a Master’s Degree in Education from San Francisco State University with a focus on English learners’ language development in mathematics. She taught at public elementary schools in Title I schools with majority ELL populations for 12 years, and was an academic literacy and English Learner coach at a K-5 Title I bilingual elementary school. She earned the English Language Learner Coach of the Year for Alameda County in 2009. She has been a presenter and teacher leader for California Reading and Literature Project as well as presenter for integrated science and literacy curriculum approaches from The Lawrence Hall of Science for the past 4 years.
